Gymnosperms are sporophyte dominant. This means that the largest, longest lived stage is the diploid sporophyte. The gametophyte stage is highly reduced in gymnosperms. Gymnosperms have staminate male cones and ovulate female cones.
Gymnosperms: “Naked Seed” Plants
Gymnosperms: “Naked Seed” Plants | An Overview of Biodiversity
Basically gymnosperms are in an evolutionary status where there are no development of fruits. So seeds remain naked. Gymnosperms are seed producing plants that have unenclosed naked seeds , called ovules , in their unfertilised state. Gymnosperms reproduce by means of an exposed seed or ovule. The seeds of many gymnosperms are borne in cones and are not visible till maturity. Gymnosperms seeds often develope either on the surface of scales or leaves. These are often modified to form cones , or at the end of short stalks.
What are naked seed plants called?
In the European, or Scots, pine Pinus sylvestris , for example, the female cones essentially collections of megasporophylls begin to develop in winter and are ready to receive pollen from the male cones in spring. During the first growing season , the pollen tube grows slowly through the nucellus, while within the ovule the megaspore nucleus, through a series of divisions, gives rise to a collection of some 2, nuclei, which are then individually enclosed by walls to form a structure called the female gametophyte or prothallus. The pollen tube ultimately penetrates the neck of one of the archegonia. Not until the second growing season, however, does the nucleus of one of the male cells in the tube unite with the oosphere nucleus.
There are a large variety of different plants species in the word, grouped into various taxonomic classes. Most plants reproduce by seeds, but some have other ways to propagate their species. Become a Study. Naked seed plants are called gymnosperms.
